The CEREC Process: From Scan to Crown

If you’ve never had to get more than a filling before, needing a dental crown might seem overwhelming. However, there’s no need to worry. The CEREC procedure is a quick and efficient solution that allows your tooth to be restored in a single appointment.

This revolutionary technology provides beautiful, same-day results that can last up to 15 years. We put together this step-by-step guide on the CEREC crown process so you’ll know exactly what to expect.

A Step-by-Step Guide to the CEREC Crown Process

Step 1: Examination

During your bi-annual exam, we may notice signs of severe tooth decay, fractures, or other dental issues that require swift treatment. Depending on the severity of the damage and your medical history, we may suggest a CEREC crown to protect your weakened tooth.

Step 2: Prepping the Tooth

If you’re a good candidate for a same-day CEREC crown, we’ll move forward with prepping the tooth. First, we’ll numb the area with a local anesthetic. Then we’ll remove any old fillings, remove the damaged portion of the tooth, and shape the tooth to fit the crown.

Step 3: Digital Scan

Next, we take a digital impression of your mouth to ensure a precise and accurate fit. Instead of using the messy putty necessary for traditional crowns, we use the CEREC Prime Scan digital dental scanner. This specialized intra-oral camera allows us to capture detailed 3D images of the tooth. The digital scan serves as the foundation for designing your custom crown.

Step 4: CAD Design

Then, using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, we will turn the digital scans into a model for your new crown. This advanced technology allows for precise customization, ensuring that your crown fits comfortably and blends seamlessly into your smile.

Step 5: Milling the Crown

After the design is finalized, the crown can be manufactured right in our office. Using Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) technology, a milling machine carves your crown out of high-quality porcelain or zirconium. The milling process only takes about 20 minutes, so there’s no need for an extra appointment. Your crown can be designed, fabricated, and placed all on the same day.

Step 6: Placing the Crown

Once the crown is ready, we will place it over the tooth. Before we permanently attach it to the tooth root, we will make any adjustments necessary to create a precise fit and optimal bite alignment. This helps the crown feel more comfortable and allows it to function just like a natural tooth.

Step 7: Bonding and Polishing the Crown

Next, we will permanently bond the crown to your tooth root using special dental cement. This step secures the crown in place and creates a stable, durable chewing surface. Lastly, we will polish the crown to give it a smooth, natural finish that enhances its appearance.
