The Solea CO2 Dental Laser Explained

At Copper Creek Dental, we offer our patients the very best in state-of-the-art dental technology. We recently invested in the Solea CO2 dental laser because of its benefits for our patients and because it can be used in so many different dental procedures. Below, we explain how it works, what it can do, and why it’s so beneficial.

What Is the Solea CO2 Laser?

Dentists have been using lasers for dental procedures for approximately two decades now. Dental lasers use high levels of energy in the form of a light beam to vaporize decayed tooth pulp and infected gum tissue.

The Solea CO2 laser was first released in 2013 by Convergent Dental, and it has been the premier dental laser ever since. It can be used on any oral tissue, including dentin, bone, enamel, and soft tissues.

Because it is painless, dentists can use the Solea laser without the need for local anesthesia. Neither is there any need for sutures, because the laser’s heat cauterizes the tissue as it goes, preventing blood loss during and after the procedure.

How Does the Solea Dental Laser Work?

The Solea CO2 dental laser vaporizes damaged tooth enamel and dentin instead of chipping away at them like a drill. Because it can be used on any type of oral tissue, our dentists can work on different surfaces in your mouth without interruption.

It is an isotopic CO2 laser with a unique wavelength of 9.3 microns that is guided using computer technology. Its computer-controlled motors direct the laser beam by moving mirrors inside the handpiece. This feature gives it extremely precise control and accuracy.

The Solea laser also allows our dentists to select the appropriate size beam for the area they are working on. For example, if they are clearing bacteria from a cavity in one of your teeth, they can input a precise spot size into the computer, and let the computer calculate the correct beam and pulse.

Solea CO2 Dental Laser Procedures

The Solea CO2 dental laser can assist in many different procedures. It can be used to treat everything from gum disease to sleep apnea. Here are some of the ways we use the Solea laser at Copper Creek Dental:

  • When preparing to fill a cavity, we can use the Solea laser instead of a drill to remove the damaged pulp.
  • To treat gum disease, we can use the laser to remove infected gum tissue and eradicate bacteria.
  • We can also use it for cosmetic treatments, like depigmentation or reshaping the gums.
  • It can even help prevent sleep apnea by reshaping the soft tissues that collapse into the throat while you are sleeping.

Three Benefits of Using the Solea CO2 Dental Laser

  1. Time Efficiency: Our dentists can work faster, which means less time in the chair for our patients.
  2. Improved Patient Experience: Our patients have less anxiety about dental procedures, because the laser is painless and there’s no need for injections or drills.
  3. Procedural Expansion: With the Solea laser, we can offer patients more procedures and better care.
